An Iowa City man was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after police reportedly found nearly a pound of marijuana in his vehicle.

The incident started when officers were called for a physical altercation that occurred on the 2100 block of 10th Street. They learned that one of the involved parties had left the scene in a Buick Enclave heading westbound. Officers located the vehicle, heading northbound on Coral Ridge Avenue taking the eastbound Route 80 on-ramp.

A traffic stop was initiated on Route 80 east of the 242 mile marker. There, officers encountered 41-year-old Denaro Smith of Taylor Drive, and reportedly could smell the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. A subsequent search allegedly turned up a container containing 388 ½ grams of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. That translates to over 13.5 ounces.

Smith was arrested for his third possession of marijuana charge, and failure to affix a drug tax stamp. If convicted on both charges, Smith could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
