A Tiffin man faces multiple charges after assaulting his live-in girlfriend and later threatening to kill her mother and brother.

The incident started at about 1am Sunday when 21-year-old Jaylen Pickens of Village Drive picked up the woman from work, and began arguing with her about not following directions, and making him repeat himself. The woman reports that while on 2nd Street in Coralville, Pickens began punching her several times in the upper leg until they arrived home. Pickens then left the scene. Arriving police observed bruising down the leg, along with other bruises all over the other leg, and both arms. The woman was reportedly very emotional, crying and saying she was in fear for her life.

Another related incident involving Pickens and the woman occurred at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Sunday at about 6:30pm.  Pickens was overheard talking to the woman on her Apple watch. He allegedly accused her of lying to him about calling her mother. Pickens then said that he was going to kill the woman’s mom and brother.

The woman was reportedly terrified and afraid to hang up the call in fear that he would come to the hospital and kill her. Once she eventually hung up, Pickens repeatedly tried to call her back, then called the hospital several times trying to locate her. He tried telling hospital staff that he was the woman’s brother and was calling about a family emergency, although caller ID showed it was clearly Pickens.

He was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 10pm Sunday. He’s been charged with two counts of Domestic Abuse Assault, Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow, and 1st degree Harassment. If convicted on all counts, Pickens could be sentenced to six years in prison. He’s being held on $10,000 bond cash or surety, and a no-contact order has been requested between the two parties involved.
