The University of Iowa Athletic Department has spent over $230,000 since June to house in hotels student-athletes who have tested positive for COVID-19.

That’s according to a report in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. The newspaper says the athletic department found housing for 180 student-athletes in an unidentified local hotel and paid for their stays and meals. That includes over $192,000 for 1,665 overnight stays and almost $41,000 for food during the stays.

Most UI students are isolated into one of 250 to 300 residence hall rooms if they test positive for COVID-19. But school officials told the Gazette they chose to house the student-athletes at the hotel because most of them live off campus.
