A local community advocacy group is hoping to get a local sales tax option on the March ballot for the city of Iowa City.

The Daily Iowan reports that Johnson County Supervisor Rod Sullivan was invited to a call with Project Better Together, and told other members Wednesday that the group wants to act very quickly.

The board voiced their opposition to the proposal, which according to Project Better Together must be provided by December 14th to the Board in order for it to get on the ballot.

Supervisor Lisa Green-Douglas called it a regressive tax, one that hurts lower income residents harder. Sullivan also noted that half of the monies generated are state-mandated to be used for property tax relief.

Supervisor Janelle Rettig said if a local sales tax option package can be done in time, she’d be happy to put it on the ballot. However, she said it would be hard to convince liberals or conservatives to support it.
