The number of University of Iowa students testing positive for COVID-19 has skyrocketed in the last few days.

According to a Friday update on the school’s coronavirus information web site, 25 new COVID-19 cases have been reported among UI students since Wednesday. That’s compared to only five from Monday to Wednesday, and ten during the same period last week.

There were four cases reported among UI employees between Wednesday and Friday. That’s a total of 2,116 student cases and 81 employee cases since the fall semester began.

One residence hall occupant is currently under quarantine and two are in self-isolation. Quarantine is used to keep someone who might have been exposed to COVID-19 away from others, while self-isolation is used to separate people infected with the virus from people who are not infected.
