Last Monday, we reported that the state had over 4000 new coronavirus cases for the second straight day. Today, we are now in the ninth straight day.

As of Sunday morning, an additional 4432 cases of coronavirus were reported over a 24-hour period, putting the total cases since the pandemic began at 184,685. That means that over 17 percent of the total cases have occurred in Iowa since the pandemic began in March in the past week alone.

The number of Iowans who have died from COVID -19 is likely to push past 2000 this week.

Hospitals reported over 200 newly-admitted patients with coronavirus for the fifth day in a row, and a total of 1279 patients being treated in Iowa hospitals.

The Iowa Covid 19 Tracker.org website reports that Johnson County has 2538 active infections, closing in on the peak of 2574 on September 13th. The current 24-hour positivity rate is 28.3%, with a 14-day rolling average of 33.92 percent.

Linn County active infections are at 6501, a new high. The 24-hour positivity rate was 36.29 percent, and the 14-day rolling average is at 41.63 percent, a slight drop from the prior day’s record 41.65 percent.

The Daily Iowan reports that University of Iowa epidemiologist Eli Perencevich posted a tweet that said, “Sunday morning in the hospital. It’s happening, Hospitals filling. ICUs are filled. Rationing critical care resources and treatments. Nurses and doctors staring at each other in disbelief. We know. This bloody sucks.”
