Allegedly pepper-spraying the father of her child and then attacking him with the empty can has led to the arrest of an Iowa City woman.

According to police, 21-year-old Vanessa Nino of Keokuk Street got into a verbal argument with the man late Wednesday afternoon when he slammed a door in her face. The argument then allegedly turned physical when Nino attempted to pepper-spray him and allegedly assaulted him with the empty can. Officers called to the scene saw multiple fresh scratches across the man’s face. Nino was uninjured.

The couple have been living together in an intimate relationship for a year and share a child together.

Nino was taken into custody and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor. If convicted, she faces up to a year in jail.
