First time Iowa unemployment claims jump 20 percent

Iowa Workforce Development reports that first time unemployment claims for the week ending November 14th jumped 20 percent, to 6312. Continuing claims remained steady, rising slightly from 35,213 to 35,242.

Nationwide, there were 742,000 initial claims filed.

Manufacturing and construction were the two industries with the most claims last week.

On Friday, it was announced that Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 3.6 percent in October, outperforming the national unemployment rate of 6.9 percent. The state’s jobless rate last October was 2.8 percent.
