Leaders at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are echoing the Centers for Disease Control’s advice on traveling for Thanksgiving: don’t.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that during a presentation to the State Board of Regents this week, Dr. Brooks Jackson said the best way to give thanks this Thanksgiving is to follow mitigation efforts and avoid gatherings with anyone outside of your immediate household.

Jackson, the vice president for medical affairs at the University of Iowa and dean at the Carver College of Medicine, acknowledges how hard it is to stay away from loved ones during the holidays, but he added that the pandemic is now at a point where it’s more important than ever to buckle down. He called the situation real, urgent, and requiring even more effort.

Dr. Jackson said that the medical professionals and support staff are undergoing mentally and physically exhausting work as they take care of coronavirus patients.
