Cedar Rapids Police have taken a man into custody after a Sunday morning shooting on the city’s southwest side.

According to a release from the city, officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of Hamilton Street Southwest just before 11:45am on reports of a disturbance. Callers reported hearing a loud bang, with several individuals running from the scene. Witnesses also indicated that a man in possession of a firearm ran inside a residence on the 100 block of 15th Avenue Southwest. He reportedly fired several rounds in the alley between 1st Street and Hamilton Street Southwest.

Arriving officers secured the area around the home where the suspected shooter and others entered. They were able to find several shell casings in the alleyway, with damage to a garage and a vehicle as a result of the gunfire.

Police made contact with a resident of the home, and were able to get the suspects to come out. Investigating officers located a handgun in the basement of the residence that the suspect or suspects attempted to hide. No injuries were reported.

The shooting suspect has been identified as 23-year-old D’Montrey Redmond. He’s been charged with being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Reckless Use of a Firearm with Property Damage, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. If convicted on the charges, Redmond could be sentenced to up to nine years in prison.
