Iowa City Police say a Cedar Rapids man ushered in the new year…and his birthday…by crashing his car into a downtown light pole.

The Johnson County Joint Emergency Communication Center received multiple reports of a Toyota Yaris crashing into a light pole at the corner of Clinton and Washington Streets, in front of Panchero’s, at 3:17am Friday. The pole fell on top of the vehicle, and witnesses say they observed the driver get out and walk away. The same witnesses pointed out the suspect, Zakaria Torgoni of Kirkwood Boulevard SW, to arriving officers before Torgoni could leave the scene.

Police say Torgoni was “extremely intoxicated”, admitted to drinking, and showed multiple signs of impairment. He allegedly failed field sobriety testing, and a Datamaster test measured his blood alcohol content at .221%.

Torgoni, who turned 29 on January 1st, was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense and Public Intoxication. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in prison.
