An Iowa City man charged with sexual abuse claims he blacked out at a party and doesn’t remember the incident.

Police say the alleged abuse occurred during a Halloween party at the Hawks Ridge Apartments. The victim was attending a party at an apartment there, and stated that he had too much to drink, went into a bedroom, and fell asleep. He told authorities he woke up to someone performing oral sex on him, and assumed it was his girlfriend so he didn’t stop the act. When the individual opened the door to leave the room, the victim said he could tell the person was a male with a beard.

The next day, the victim described the person to his girlfriend and other people who were at the party. The description matched that of 20-year-pld Kyle Ahrens, who lives at the apartment. The victim’s shorts and underwear were collected as evidence, and a search warrant was conducted to get a DNA sample from Ahrens.

During an interview with authorities, Ahrens said that there would be no reason his DNA was on the victim’s underwear; that the victim never solicited him to perform oral sex; and that he blacked out and didn’t remember anything from the night of the incident.

DNA analysis showed the evidence contained Ahrens’ DNA and another person’s, believed to be the victim’s.

Ahrens was taken into custody Sunday morning, and charged with 3rd degree Sexual Abuse, a Class C Felony punishable by a prison term of up to ten years if convicted.
