Starting today, families who have lost loved ones to COVID-19 can apply to FEMA for assistance with funeral expenses.

Up to $9000 is available per family and covers coronavirus-related deaths that have occurred since January 20th 2020.

The applicant must be a US Citizen, but there’s no requirement for the deceased person to have been a US Citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien. Applicants may be required to provide death certificates, funeral expense documents, and proof of funds received from other sources.

Applicants will need to call the COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Line between 8am and 8pm Monday through Friday at 844-684-6333.

FEMA’s website says that they’ve received reports of scammers reaching out to people offering to register them for funeral assistance. FEMA has not sent those notifications and do not contact people prior to them registering for the assistance.
