Vaccination clinics in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids contributed to what officials say was the biggest one-day increase in the rates of coronavirus vaccine doses, as well as the number of residents who have now been fully vaccinated against the virus.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that over 165,000 Linn County residents have been given at least one dose, a one-day increase of 9 percent. Over 69,000 are fully vaccinated, about 38 ½ percent of the 16-and up population. The city of Cedar Rapids hosted a 24 hour vaccination clinic that ended at 9am Sunday.

In Johnson County,  a one-day increase of 8 percent brings the total of residents who have at least one dose to over 127,700, and over 54,000 are fully vaccinated. That’s a one-day increase of 11 percent. Just under 44 percent of the 16-and up Johnson County population are now fully vaccinated. An 8-hour vaccine clinic at a former HyVee location Saturday was set to administer 1000 doses.

Both counties are performing better than the statewide average, where just over a third of eligible Iowans have been fully vaccinated.

The number of new cases, however, reminds us that the pandemic is far from over. The state added over 700 cases from 11am Friday to 11am Sunday, according to the Gazette, bringing the total number of cases in Iowa since the pandemic began to just under 360,000.
