Cedar Rapids man gets suspended sentence on 2018 Iowa City armed robbery case

A Cedar Rapids man involved in an armed robbery in Iowa City over three years ago will not face jail time.

On Monday, Judge Lars Anderson passed sentence on 22-year-old Keith Wittmon-Anderson. He faced charges of 1st degree Robbery, Carrying Weapons, 1st degree Theft, Going Armed with Intent, and Possession of Marijuana for an incident that occurred in the early morning hours of August 1st, 2018.

Wittmon-Anderson and 19-year-old Patrick Lucas approached the victim, with Lucas brandishing a handgun. When the victim refused their demand for money, police say Wittmon-Anderson grabbed the gun and tried to intimidate the man. After a physical struggle, the men fled empty-handed to a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Sais Troche Vargas.

Both Lucas and Troche Vargas reached plea deals to avoid jail time in December 2018. Whittmon-Anderson also will not be imprisoned.

On Monday, he had the first degree robbery, going armed with intent and marijuana possession charges dismissed. On the remaining two charges, he was sentenced to a 10 year suspended sentence on the Theft charge and 2 years suspended sentence on the Carrying Weapons charge.

Whittmon-Anderson was also sentenced to three years of probation and fines totaling $1625.He’s also ordered to have no contact with the victim in the incident.
