The man paralyzed after an officer-involved shooting in Cedar Rapids nearly five years ago will be paid $8 million in a settlement by the city’s insurance company to settle a lawsuit that was set to go to trial today.

KCRG TV reports that as part of the agreement, Jerime Mitchell agreed to dismiss the claim with no acknowledgement of fault or liability on the part of the defendants.

The incident that incapacitated Mitchell occurred in November of 2016. Sergeant Lucas Jones, the man who shot Mitchell, was fired in June of last year for what was officially noted as violation of department policy.

A grand jury cleared Jones of any wrongdoing, but Mitchell filed a civil suit against the officer as well as the City of Cedar Rapids.

Trial was set to begin today before the settlement was reached.

States Insurance is the City’s insurer. A news release from the company said they decided a settlement was in the best interests of the city.

The Cedar Rapids City Council has to approve the settlement before it’s paid out.
