Iowa Workforce Development is reporting an increase in fraudulent activity related to unemployment claims.

In a release from the department, they say the fraud has occurred by claims filed using stolen identities, unauthorized access to an individual’s account, and computer-generated claims from a single employer that exceeds the number of employees.

The fraudulent activity isn’t isolated to just Iowa, as fraud is occurring in every state. Workforce Development has been working with the US Department of Labor and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies to share information about bad actors and their methods of committing fraud.

The release lists indicators of fraudulent activity, including mailings or tax forms from Iowa Workforce Development when you haven’t filed an unemployment claim, a call or notice from the department when you haven’t filed a claim, your employer notifying you that a claim was filed in your name, and suspicious activity on your bank accounts.

You should contact Iowa Workforce Development if you suspect such activity. They can be reached by emailing [email protected]  or calling them at 866-239-0843.
