One killed in airplane crash near Greencastle Airport

One person was killed in a Sunday afternoon plane crash near Greencastle Airport.

That’s according to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. The release says deputies responded to 250th Street and Greencastle Avenue just before 4pm for a report of a plane crash. 9-1-1 calls were received from witnesses stating an airplane was observed near the Greencastle Airport, and a short time later the plane crashed into a neighboring farm field. The Iowa State Patrol, North Liberty Police Department, Tiffin Fire Department, Oxford Fire Department, Johnson County Emergency Management, and Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office all responded to the scene.

The single occupant of the single-engine aircraft was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the individual is being withheld pending family notification.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and will be joining the investigation.
