An argument over marriage infidelity led to the arrest of an Iowa City man on assault charges.

Police say the incident occurred June 7th at the couple’s Petsel Place residence around 8pm. 29-year-old Carlos Henriquez Martinez and his wife were in a verbal argument about their marriage and the belief that one of them was seeing someone else and not being faithful to the other.

During the argument, Henriquez Martinez allegedly kicked the woman approximately five times in the left thigh, causing severe bruising, pain and discomfort.

Another argument allegedly occurred on Friday (June 11th) at approximately 5 am. In that incident,  Henriquez Martinez reportedly slapped the woman on the stomach several times, causing pain and discomfort.  An officer who spoke with the woman later that day could not detect any marks on her stomach, but there were still severe bruise marks on Henriquez Martinez’s wife’s thigh.

Henriquez Martinez was taken into custody Saturday night and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor. A no-contact order was requested between the couple.
