A Kalona man wanted on a domestic assault warrant was taken into custody Friday.

Police say the incident occurred in Iowa City April 16th on the 2000 block of Industrial Park Road around 7 am. 30-year-old Jerrell Clemons and the victim had been cohabitating in an intimate relationship for approximately a year, and the woman was confronted by Clemons after getting off work in the parking lot over what authorities say were matters over perceived infidelity. The woman got into her car, but Clemons reportedly blocked the door with his body, preventing her from closing it and driving away.

Clemons then allegedly tried to pull the woman out of the car, grabbing at her neck and legs. He’s also accused of taking the woman’s cellphone away from her during the struggle.

The woman was able to kick Clemons away, slam the car door, and drive away. She reportedly suffered back injuries in the incident, and drove to her sister’s house in Kalona for safety. Clemons then called the sister, and issued an ultimatum for the woman to return home or he would destroy her property and slash her car tires.

During the subsequent investigation, Clemons was determined to be at the couple’s residence. He allegedly refused to answer the door when Washington County Sheriff’s deputies came to further investigate the incident. He also reportedly hung up on an officer when they called Clemons.

A warrant was issued later the day of the incident, and Clemons was apprehended and booked at the Johnson County Jail Friday evening. He’s been charged with Domestic Assault causing Bodily Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted.

A no-contact order was requested by the victim.
