Cedar Rapids man charged in Ped Mall shooting

Iowa City Police have charged a Cedar Rapids man in connection with a weekend shooting on the Ped Mall.

According to an ICPD news release, 19-year-old Andre Roberts Jr. of Park Towne Court NE is charged with Attempted Murder, Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, and Use of a Dangerous Weapon in the Commission of a Crime.

Police received reports of shots fired in the Ped Mall at approximately 1:10 am last Sunday. Arriving officers determined that a fight involving several people occurred in the alley next to the Fieldhouse bar. Roberts reportedly fired several shots from a handgun into the crowd. A 24-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy were struck and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Roberts was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 1pm Thursday. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 38 years in prison.

The incident remains under investigation as police continue to work on identifying others involved.
