An Illinois man was arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly striking a light pole north of downtown Iowa City while drunk.

Shortly after 5 am, 30-year-old David Adams of Warsaw Illinois was operating a 2001 Chevy with Florida plates when he reportedly left the roadway and struck a light pole in the 300 block of North Madison Street.

Police say Adams was slumped over the wheel while the vehicle was still running and in gear. He reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, the odor of ingested alcohol, was wearing bar wristbands, and admitted to drinking.

After showing impairment on field tests, Adams failed a PBT and provided a Datamaster reading of .124 percent.

He was charged with first offense OWI, a serious misdemeanor.
