An Iowa City man who allegedly assaulted his long-time girlfriend and broke her phone to keep her from contacting anyone has been taken into custody.

Deputies went to the Elkhorn Trail residence of 55-year-old Jeffery George during the midnight hour Tuesday. George allegedly wouldn’t let them into the home to investigate the welfare of the protected party, his girlfriend of seven years. Authorities reportedly had to force their way in, and George took off running. Deputies tased George to subdue him.

The woman had a black eye, and said that George struck her earlier. He then reportedly broke her phone to prevent her from contacting anyone.  George allegedly made the woman stay in her room when deputies showed up.

The no-contact order between the two is still active.

George was taken into custody; he’s been charged with False Imprisonment, Interference with Official Acts, Violation of the no-contact order, and Domestic Assault causing injury. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 25 months in jail.
