A Coralville man who allegedly used a homophobic slur while assaulting a victim has been arrested.

36-year-old Delvon Funches of Holiday Road was approached by the victim in the 600 block of 1st Avenue Monday just before 9pm. Funches allegedly believed that the victim was offering homosexual intercourse, and called the victim a “faggot” after the interaction. He then reportedly closed-fist punched the victim in the head multiple times, continuing to use the homophobic slur.

Once the victim was knocked to the ground, Funches allegedly searched through the victim’s pockets before walking away from the incident.

Funches was taken into custody. He faces charges of Assault causing Bodily Injury and 2nd Degree Burglary. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to twelve years in prison.
