A North Liberty man has been taken into custody after he allegedly led police on a pursuit in a reportedly stolen motorcycle.
At approximately 8:35 pm Monday, 36-year-old Randall Grandstaff of East Zeller Street was operating a motorcycle without a license plate near the intersection of Dubuque and Juniper Streets. As officers attempted a traffic stop, Grandstaff allegedly accelerated, reaching speeds of at least 25 miles an hour over the posted speed limit and ignoring police lights and siren.
Grandstaff reportedly ditched the motorcycle in a residential neighborhood and was recovered. A check of the registration showed that the vehicle was stolen, and allegedly had been repainted so that it was no longer recognizable as the original stolen bike. He also reportedly left a firearm behind. A check of Grandstaff’s driving record showed his status as barred until March of 2024. He’s also been convicted of a felony stemming from a reported forgery and theft incident in March of 2019.
Grandstaff was arrested and charged with Eluding, 2nd degree Theft, Driving while Barred as a Habitual Offender, and Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon. If convicted on all counts, Grandstaff could be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison.
