Officials with the Johnson County Auditor’s Office are reminding residents of the rules regarding the placement of yard signs for election candidates.
According to a recent news release, yard signs should not be placed in the public right of way or on public property. Signs also can’t be placed at people’s homes without permission.
Within cities, the right of way includes the area between the sidewalk and street. In rural Johnson County, the right of way generally extends 33 feet from the center line of the road and includes the ditch.
Complaints about signs in the right of way or on public property should be directed to the appropriate city streets department, or in the rural part of the county, Johnson County Secondary Roads. They’ll remove signs as their schedule permits. The auditor’s office warns residents not to risk a confrontation by taking signs down themselves.
