An Iowa City transient has been arrested after allegedly attacking a security guard at the Old Capitol Mall.

Police say the incident occurred just before 11am Sunday in front of Freddy’s on South Clinton Street. 24-year-old Steven Elliot and the guard reportedly knew each other from previous interactions. Elliott had been trespassed from the property twice in the previous week, on the 5th and 7th.

Sunday, Elliott was observed drinking on the patio and was told to stop. He allegedly reacted by attacking the guard and they wrestled on the ground. Then, according to the guard and another witness, Elliott picked up a heavy metal chair and hit the guard in the head with it, causing an injury to his left eye.

Elliott reportedly fled the scene but was located by officers at Kum & Go. The officer took the guard there, and he positively identified Elliott as his attacker.

Elliott was charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury and Trespass. He could be sentenced to up to a year in jail if convicted. A no-contact order was requested between the two parties involved.
