A Cedar Rapids man has been arrested after what police describe as a “very violent fight” Saturday afternoon in downtown Iowa City.

Iowa City Police were called to the corner of Washington and Gilbert Streets, in front of Gabe’s, just after 1:30pm. A caller reported two men were fighting, with one threatening to kill the other.

Arriving officers report seeing 23-year-old Paris Hollingshed of 8th Avenue Southeast and another man still fighting on the sidewalk. Witnesses said Hollingshed initiated the fight and struck the other man in the face, causing scratches around his nose and eyes. The man was later transported to a hospital for his injuries.

Police say Hollingshed was non compliant with their commands during handcuffing and had to be pepper-sprayed into compliance.

Hollingshed is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
