An Iowa City man accused of stealing an expensive bicycle on the University of Iowa campus is now behind bars.

According to online records, 32-year-old Dustin Wimer of Amhurst Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 1:30 Wednesday morning.  Wimer is accused of stealing a bicycle valued at over $2,000 from the bike rack at Peterson Hall on Grand Avenue just before 5:15am on September 15th. UI Police say Wimer is seen on surveillance video stealing the bicycle, and a friend of Wimer’s reportedly told police he had brought the bike to his house.

Wimer was also wanted for failing to appear at his initial court date on a Driving While Suspended charge. Police knew Wimer was a suspect in a series of bicycle thefts in Iowa City and Coralville and pulled over his 2007 Dodge F-150 as it was pulling out of the parking lot of Linder Tires on Highway 1 West just before 7pm on September 8th. He allegedly told police he had no license and no ID on him. Police say he also claimed to know nothing about the bicycles being taken and placed into the back of his truck.

Wimer was also formally charged for an August 28th incident during which he was stopped by police while riding a bicycle without lights near Highway 6 and Keokuk Street just after 10:30pm. Iowa City Police say Wimer dropped a meth pipe and tried to kick it away. He later allegedly admitted to smoking meth earlier that day. The substance found inside the pipe tested positive for meth.

Wimer is charged with 2nd Degree Theft, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Driving While Suspended. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over six years in prison.
