An armed Coralville man was taken into custody following a late Tuesday night traffic stop.

Coralville Police say they pulled over a 2011 Chrysler 200 at 9th Street and 21st Avenue just before 11:45 Tuesday night and noticed the smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. One of the passengers, identified as 25-year-old Christian Bryant of 10th Street, was allegedly found in possession of a clear plastic baggie containing five grams of marijuana. Police say Bryant then became resistive and tried to flee, but was quickly captured. One officer suffered injuries to the lip and jaw as a result.

A search of Bryant’s person allegedly turned up a Xanax bar as well as a loaded double-barrel .357 magnum Derringer handgun. Police say there were two live .38 special rounds in the chamber, and a check of its serial number showed the gun as stolen. Bryant claimed he found the gun in a box in his uncle’s basement. He also allegedly gave police a false name, date of birth and social security number.

Bryant has a previous felony conviction out of Illinois, and is not allowed to possess a firearm. He’s charged with Carrying Weapons, Person Ineligible to Carry Weapons, Dominion or Control of a Firearm By a Domestic Abuser, Trafficking in Stolen Weapons, Interference With Official Acts, Interference With Official Acts Involving a Firearm, Interference With Official Acts Causing Bodily Injury, 5th Degree Theft, Possession of a Controlled Substance – 2nd Offense, and Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Drug. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 19 years in prison.
