An Iowa City convenience store employee faces charges that she falsified purchases for her own benefit.

19-year-old Tiyania Fourte of Amber Lane was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 6am Wednesday. Management at the Broadway Street Casey’s told Iowa City Police that there was a discrepancy in the deposit amount following Fourte’s shift on December 27th. Upon checking security video, Casey’s manager says he discovered Fourte had created a fictitious transaction just after 7pm that night to purchase a $250 Netspend Visa gift card with “cash” listed as the payment method. About a half-hour later, Fourte allegedly created a second fictitious transaction to procure another $250 Netspend gift card, which she can allegedly be seen putting into her pocket.

Police say Fourte admitted to making the false transactions and trying to use one of the cards inside the store. But she allegedly claimed the card didn’t work, so she threw it away.

Investigators say Fourte also admitted to occasionally eating food and drinking fountain drinks from the store without paying, arguing that she saw “everyone else” doing it, so she assumed it was okay.

Fourte is charged with 4th Degree Theft, a Serious Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of one year in jail.
