An Iowa City man faces a number of charges stemming from an incident at his residence Friday night.

According to police, they received a 911 call just after 8:45 pm from a woman who alleged that she was in a physical fight with 42-year-old  Matthew Parcel of Friendship Street. Upon arrival, officers found Parcel inside his vehicle with the child the two share.

The vehicle reportedly had the strong odor of marijuana, and a subsequent probable cause search turned up 8 grams of the drug, along with a pipe and an open bottle of alcohol. Parcel allegedly had the strong odor of ingested alcohol, bloodshot watery eyes, thick slurred speech, and bloody knuckles on his right hand. He reportedly refused to place his hands behind his back and had to be forcibly placed inside the squad car.

After being read his Miranda rights, Parcel allegedly admitted to being drunk, fighting with the mother of his child, and not knowing or remembering that his young child was in the vehicle with him.

Parcel was taken into custody. He’s been charged with Possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense, possession of drug paraphernalia, 2nd offense Domestic Abuse Assault, Child Endangerment, Public Intoxication, and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, Parcel faces a prison sentence of over nine years.
