A Coralville woman was taken into custody Wednesday on a theft warrant stemming from the scamming of her boyfriend’s mother.

According to police, the incident occurred on September 2nd. 33-year-old Tasheanna McConnell of Holiday Road reportedly orchestrated a fake jail bond incident with her boyfriend, who was an inmate at the Johnson County Jail. The two allegedly are on a recorded call setting up the incident, where the mother is told that they can secure the release of her son with $5000.

McConnell reportedly drove her boyfriend’s mother to about a block from the jail to complete the ruse. She also got an additional $150 from the woman, supposedly to give to the inmate upon his release. McConnell is seen on surveillance video walking up to the jail, and a recorded call between her and her boyfriend is also on record.

McConnell then reportedly drove the woman home after securing the money from her. Later, McConnell and her boyfriend are on a recorded call discussing how to split up the money.

Police say the $5150 taken in the incident has not been returned to the rightful owner, and a warrant was issued for McConnell’s arrest on September 21st. She was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon.

McConnell has been charged with 2nd degree theft, and driving while barred as a habitual offender during the September incident. She faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted on both counts.
