A Muscatine man was taken into custody Saturday evening after his alleged reckless driving led to an OWI arrest.

Sheriff’s deputies were contacted on reports of a driver heading southbound on Highway 218 operating his vehicle recklessly. The man, identified as 49-year-old Michael Truitt of Provence Lane in Muscatine, was stopped near the 88 mile marker in Hills just before 5:45pm.

Truitt was reportedly wearing dark sunglasses even though it was dark outside. He allegedly had the odor of ingested alcohol and slurred speech. The arrest report says that Truitt had to use his vehicle to maintain his balance, and admitted to drinking two bottles of wine.

After being unable to complete field testing, a PBT showed his blood-alcohol level at .217, and a subsequent Datamaster showed it at over three times the legal limit, with a reading of .247.

Truitt was charged with his first OWI, a serious misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail if convicted.
