Two local women have been arrested as part of a stolen check scheme.

Iowa City Police say on February 13th 19-year-old Jordan Hanrahan of Elkhorn Trail in the Regency manufactured housing community forged a signature on a check that she had previously stolen. The $300 check was written to 21-year-old Kendyl Kent of Alydar Drive in North Liberty. Investigators say Kent then cashed the check at the Hills Bank branch on South Gilbert Street.

Officers made contact with Hanrahan on an unrelated call later that day at J&S Express on Rochester Avenue. She was allegedly in possession of stolen checks as well as pills for which she did not have a prescription. Video surveillance from Hills Bank allegedly shows Hanrahan and Kent cashing the stolen check at the drive-thru ATM.

Hanrahan and Kent were each booked into the Johnson County Jail on Friday. Hanrahan is charged with two counts of Forgery and one count each of 4th Degree Theft, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Medication. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of 13 years in prison.

Kent faces the same Forgery and Theft charges and could spend up to 11 years behind bars.
