A University of Iowa student was taken into custody early Sunday after allegedly providing a fake ID to the officer investigating his single-vehicle accident.

Arrest reports indicated that 19-year-old Thomas Sullivan of the Mayflower Residence Hall on North Dubuque Street self-reported a single vehicle accident on the 100 block of Park Road just before 1 am. The arriving officer found him behind the wheel of a 2013 Chevy Equinox. When the officer asked Sullivan for his driver’s license, he allegedly gave the officer a completely fictitious Illinois license with his name and photo but a date of birth making him appear to be of legal drinking age.

Sullivan reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, unsteady balance, had the odor of ingested alcohol, was wearing bar wristbands, and admitted to drinking. After showing measurable impairment on field testing, he was given a PBT showing a blood-alcohol level of .186 percent. A subsequent Datamaster showed the level at .178 percent.

Sullivan was taken into custody and charged with firsts offense OWI and possession of a fictitious license. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to two years in jail.
