A Coralville man who claimed he kicked in a door because he thought the woman inside needed help was arrested for criminal mischief Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the 900 block of 23rd avenue at around 12:30 pm. Officers were dispatched to the woman’s home for a suspect who kicked in the front door of her residence. 28-year-old LaDarrel Jones of Kodiak Court was located at the intersection of 23rd Avenue and 10th Street. He allegedly told police that he thought someone needed help, so he broke the door in.

The woman had a different story.

She told police that she was upstairs when she heard a loud bang. The woman went to the front door, where she reportedly saw Jones on her porch with the door forced open. He allegedly asked her if she needed help, to which she replied that she was fine, and asked Jones to leave.

Estimated damage to the door frame, dead bolt and door was approximately $2500.

Jones was taken into custody and charged with 2nd degree Criminal Mischief, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
