An Iowa City man who allegedly strangled the woman he was staying with was arrested after the woman contacted authorities.

Police say the woman told them the incident occurred sometime on the 7th of June, when 37-year-old Joshua Deverney allegedly strangled her. The victim stated that she blacked out during the incident and complained of pain. She reportedly failed to notify police right away because she was afraid of what Deverney might do.

Once Deverney stopped staying with the woman, she felt comfortable enough to call 911 to report the incident.

Police say Deverney wouldn’t answer their repeated phone calls, and Deverney allegedly contacted the woman to question her about  why police were looking for him.

A warrant was issued for Deverney’s arrest on June 22nd; he was taken to the Johnson County Jail Sunday evening. He’s been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault, 3rd or Subsequent Offense, and Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow. If convicted on both charges, Deverney faces up to ten years in prison.
