An Iowa City man faces several charges after allegedly being involved in an overnight assault.

The criminal complaints against 46-year-old Demetrius Jones indicated that just before 2:30 am Wednesday, he and an unnamed victim were involved in a verbal altercation outside the Kum & Go on South Gilbert Street. Things allegedly escalated when Jones pushed the man in the face without any physical provocation,  knocking him to the ground.

Jones then reportedly walked away from the scene. When interviewed by police, he denied being the person in the surveillance video, stating he was on the other side of the street when the assault took place. Jones was wearing the same clothing as the man in the video, however.

He allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, had the odor of ingested alcohol, and admitted being drunk. Jones reportedly pulled away from the arresting officer while being handcuffed, refused to walk under his own power to the squad car, and while being searched slammed his head on the hood of the vehicle causing about $500 in damages.

Jones allegedly had to be physically forced into the back of the patrol car, and kicked the officer in the jaw while inside. He also reportedly threatened to assault the officer while being transported to the Johnson County Jail.

Jones faces charges of Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury, 4th degree Criminal Mischief, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations causing Bodily Injury, Assault causing Bodily Injury or Mental Illness, and Public Intoxication. If convicted, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
