A University of Iowa graduate student had a dangerously high breath alcohol content when he was involved in a Saturday afternoon car crash on a major Coralville thoroughfare.

That’s according to Coralville Police, who say 24-year-old Graham Ausdal of South Johnson Street registered a BAC of .304% after he crashed his 2012 Toyota Camry with Illinois plates just after 1:45pm on the 500 block of Hayden Fry Way.

Police say Ausdal was still in the driver’s seat when they arrived, and the car was still running with the gear shift in drive. He allegedly refused to get out of the car, and officers had to remove him by force after they unlocked the passenger door. Ausdal reportedly refused field sobriety tests at the scene, saying he was “done”. He later completed the testing at the Coralville Police station.

Online resources show a BAC over a .300% is considered “severe alcohol intoxication” and could lead to stupor, blackout, and total loss of consciousness.

Ausdal is charged with Operating While Intoxicated.
