A weekend domestic incident has led to the arrest of an Iowa City man on assault charges.

Police say that 23-year-old Jason Rodas of Amber Lane and the woman were involved in an argument over relationship issues Sunday at around 7:30 am. During the argument, Rodas allegedly grabbed the woman in a bear hug, lifted her up and threw her on the bed. She also reported that she was dragged off the bed by Rodas, who allegedly grabbed her by the neck.

Rodas then told the woman that she needed to leave the residence and leave her belongings. When she said she was going to call the police, Rodas allegedly took her phone to prevent her from doing so.

As the woman attempted to leave the residence, Rodas reportedly grabbed a kitchen knife, held it up in a threatening manner, and used it to scratch the wall.

Police say Rodas and the victim have been in a relationship since he was in his early teens and the two have a four-year-old son together.

Rodas was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault while displaying a Weapon and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on both counts, he faces a jail term of up to 25 months.
