A Coralville man was arrested Monday after allegedly choking his domestic partner and having illegal possession of guns.

According to the arrest report, 49-year-old Claudio Ramirez of Olde Hickory Road has been in an intimate relationship with the woman for 14 years. On Sunday night at approximately 11:45, the two were reportedly arguing about how loud she had the TV on.  Ramirez then allegedly choked her with both hands against the wall with her feet off the ground.  When he let go, the woman fell to the ground, and Ramirez reportedly dragged her across the floor to the bathroom.

Arriving officers noticed skin torn from the woman’s arms from being dragged, and a red mark on her neck. She stated to officers that she was afraid Ramirez was going to kill her, and had to point a loaded gun at him to leave her alone. She also alleged that she was afraid when she saw Ramirez had a loaded pistol laying in his bedroom, and carried guns out of the house that she owned.  Ramirez is a convicted felon on a Domestic Abuse count from 2005 and as such is not allowed to possess or have control over weapons.

Ramirez was taken to the Johnson County Jail on an arrest warrant Monday morning. He faces charges of Dominion or Control of a Weapon by a Domestic Abuser, Domestic Abuse Assault 2nd offense, and Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to twelve years in prison.

A no-contact order was requested by the victim.
