The University of Iowa College Republicans group has called for the expulsion of a freshman who allegedly attempted to disrupt the organization’s appearance at a Hubbard Park fair.

The Daily Iowan reports that the Student Organization Fair at the park occurred August 31st. The freshman overturned the College Republicans club table, then attempted to flip the Students for Life table over before the organization’s president stopped him. The student then allegedly took a bowl off the table and threw things around before striking the president with their bike helmet.

UI College Republicans treasurer Kyle Clare said what happened at the fair is just one example of political violence against conservative groups on campus. At last week’s state Board of Regents meeting, he called for them to do more to strengthen free speech and, quote, “make an example of anyone who commits political violence for the safety of our students.” To that end, Clare and other conservative leaders of the student organization are calling for the student’s expulsion.

In an e-mail to the Daily Iowan, Assistant Vice President of External Relations Jeneane Beck said that the UI police department are working hard to keep students safe. A criminal investigation is pending into the events at the Student Organization Fair.
