Iowa women’s basketball recruit Ava Jones has learned some grim news.

According to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, head coach Lisa Bluder told the University of Iowa Presidential Committee on Athletics on Thursday that Jones has received the results of an MRI that shows all four major ligaments in both of Jones’ knees were torn when she and her family were hit by an impaired driver in Louisville on July 5th. Her father was killed, and her mother and brother were injured. The driver has since been charged with Murder and Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence as well as four charges of 1st Degree Assault.

Bluder says with the MRI results, it is unlikely Jones will ever play competitive basketball again.

A GoFundMe account set up for Jones has raised over $150,000.

Bluder says the Iowa program will honor Jones’ scholarship, even if her playing career is over, and that she will be a part of the team during her time at the UI.
