International student enrollment at the University of Iowa has declined for the fifth straight year.

The Daily Iowan reports that after reaching 4011 international students across all levels of education, the number in the UI’s international and scholar statistics profile was just 2176 last year.

The number of undergraduate international students also declined; both drops follow national trends.

Russell Ganim is the associate provost and dean of International Programs at the University. He told the DI the loss of Chinese international students, who make up 35 percent of UI international students, accelerated the student decline because of COVID-19. China has increased their higher education infrastructure in the last four years, which also reduced the need for students to go outside the country.

ISU and the University of Northern Iowa also reported a drop in international students.

Ganim added that the University of Iowa is increasing recruiting efforts to rebuild the international student population.
