Victims identified in Sunday morning accidents on I80

The Iowa State Patrol has provided details of the multi-vehicle pileup on westbound I80 Sunday morning that left two dead.

Crash reports indicate that at approximately 5:35 am, a Volvo semi driven by Johan Caballero-Venero of Houston Texas jackknifed due to icy conditions, blocking all three lanes of traffic. A Chevy truck being driven by 57 –year-old David Mosinski of Fairfield Iowa struck the trailer of the semi, causing fatal injury.

A passenger in the semi, 37-year-old Junier Caballero-Venero of Houston, exited the vehicle after the initial crash and was killed outside the vehicle.

In all, 9 semis and 7 other vehicles were involved in the tie-up that took several hours to clear up. Several people were injured and taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment; none of the other injuries were reported to be life-threatening.

The incidents remain under investigation.
