Iowa City Police say a woman with felony convictions out of Illinois tried to illegally purchase a handgun last month.

According to arrest records, 34-year-old Nicole Jenkins of West Benton Street attempted to purchase a firearm from Fin & Feather on Highway 1 West on February 25th. Jenkins reportedly filled out an ATF form in which she stated she was not a convicted felon, which would make her ineligible to possess a firearm. A background search determined that Jenkins has theft-related felonies out of Cook County, Illinois from 2007 and 2008. Police say she eventually admitted to knowing she had the convictions on her record when she filled out the form and handled the gun.

Jenkins was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 9:45 Wednesday morning and charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon and Using False Information to Acquire a Weapon. If convicted on both charges, she faces a maximum of ten years in prison.
