A convicted Johnson County sex offender has died in custody.

According to the Iowa Department of Corrections, 84-year-old Donald Dwight Fetters was pronounced dead due to natural causes at 2:45 p.m. last Thursday. Fetters had been in hospice at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center, where he had been housed due to chronic illness.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says Fetters visited a rural Shueyville residence on multiple occasions between January 1st, 2006 and January 26th, 2007.  During each visit, he sexually assaulted the victim multiple times when they were alone. Fetters detailed accounts of the assaults in a recorded interview with investigators. He also admitted to committing sexual assaults in other jurisdictions.

Arrest records indicate Fetters had a prior conviction for sexual abuse.
Fetters had been serving a 25-year maximum term after being convicted on a charge of 2nd Degree Sex Abuse. His sentence began on August 24, 2011.
