Iowa City Animal Services is seeking information about a dog bite incident that occurred over the  weekend, while reminding residents of the city’s leash laws.

According to a Tuesday release, the incident occurred Saturday afternoon around 1:15, along the walking trails behind West High School and near Irving Avenue. The owner was described as a short woman with pink in her hair. The dog is described as a black/gray and white Husky.

Iowa City Animal Services is seeking information on the rabies vaccination status of the dog. If anyone has any information, they are encouraged to contact Iowa City Animal Services directly at 356-5295 or The Iowa City Police Department at 356-6800.

On Tuesday, the City also put out a release about leash regulations.

Iowa City requires all dogs and cats be confined to private properties or restrained by a leash not exceeding 10 feet. The pet must also be in control of a competent person. This regulation is in effect in all public areas in Iowa City, including parks, sidewalks, and trails. The exceptions are the Thornberry and Rita’s Ranch dog parks.

Leashes allow owners to have control over their dogs, mitigating the potential for bites to humans or other animals. Pets who are not kept on a leash are also mistaken as strays and are at a higher risk of being hit by a vehicle.

Violating the City’s leash law is punishable by a fine of up to $195 for the first offense. More information on Iowa City’s pet regulations can be found at www.icanimalcenter.org .
