A drunk driving suspect faces charges that he threatened Iowa City Police officers and their families.

Officers report seeing 22-year-old Javonte Hurst of Jeanerette, Louisiana backing his 2006 Cadillac CTS out of a parking spot outside the Robert A. Lee Community Rec Center just before 1:30 Sunday morning. Police say they had an encounter with Hurst earlier in the night, and he had appeared intoxicated.

Hurst reportedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests, registered breath alcohol levels of .099% and .084%, and admitted to drinking.

While being transported to the Johnson County Jail, Hurst allegedly threatened to kill the arresting officers by saying he would “end” them and their families. He’s now charged with Operating While Intoxicated and 1st Degree Harassment. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of three years in jail.
